David HendrenName :David Hendren

Born : 22 Jan 1948

Lives : Moruya, NSW

Family : Married to Sharon for 39 years and the best decision I ever made.

Amputation : Right below knee as a result of being hit head on by a drunk disqualified driver in a stolen car whilst out pushb ike riding with my eldest son on Boxing day 1982 which also resulted in multiple injuries to right shoulder and spinal damage.

Prior to my accident I was active in many sports including grade hockey in Sydney, touch football, squash, and surfing. I grew up playing rugby league, soccer, tennis, basketball, swimming and water polo so my whole persona was defined by my sporting abilities. After the accident and the fitting of prosthesis I had about seven years of continual breakdown of my stump resulting in severe ulceration and some depression but this was finally sorted out and we moved to Moruya on the NSW south coast 12 years ago.

Golfing History :

I began to play golf at our club and finally found amputee golf through my prosthetist. I attended my first tournament at the 3rd Australian Championship at Tweed Heads and have since played in all tournaments in NSW, Qld and Vic. Although I haven’t had much success in the past I am currently the 2008 Queensland Open Below Knee Champion.

My greatest enjoyment is derived from attending and spending time with all the other amputees and their partners. My great hope is that the organisation continues to grow and that we can all help other amputees, not only to enjoy this great game but also to enrich their lives as it has done for Sharon and me. We are both really looking forward to attending the South Australian Amputee Open in November.
